Rhinophyma is a skin condition that ultimately affects the appearance of the nose, causing a bulbous nasal tip that is often dark red or purple in color. Sometimes referred to as a “whiskey nose,” “gin blossom,” “toros nose” or “potato nose,” rhinophyma is thought to be the result of enlarged oil glands and has been linked to the inflammatory skin condition known as rosacea.

While rhinophyma is initially medically managed, at times it does require surgical or procedural intervention. If you are in good health and have realistic expectations, rhinophyma excision may be a good option for you.
This can be treated with simple excision using local anesthesia or with a CO2 laser.
The nose is commonly covered with gauze after treatment which will be changed over the next few days to assist in the healing process. There will be some drainage from the wound as the nose starts to heal. The skin can take up to 14 days to heal but the new skin will be pink and very sensitive to the sun. Special precautions are needed to protect the skin as it returns to its normal color. Scarring should not occur but is possible.
Rhinophyma in advanced stages may require a procedure. Patients can discuss this with their dermatologist and can schedule an appointment with Dr. Bender to see if a cosmetic procedure is the best next step.
This procedure can be performed with local anesthesia although this can be combined with IV sedation.
It is uncommon for an equal flare of rhinophyma to recur after this procedure. That being said, some patients may require more than one procedure to achieve their best outcome. It is best to come in for a consultation to hear about the best option for each patient’s case.
